In the Engageny Ceasar Chavez lesson plan, NY state students are told to look for evidence based claims from within a propaganda speech. During the speech Mr. Chavez alleges racism and uses the term Anglo while describing the dominant culture. The lesson plan provides this definition for Anglo to students:
The definition of Anglo is specific and Wikipedia outlines it perfectly:
“Anglo is a Late Latin prefix used to denote English- in conjunction with another toponym or demonym. The word is derived from Anglia, the Latin name for England, and still the modern name of its eastern region. Anglia and England both mean land of the Angles, a Germanic people originating in the north German peninsula of Angeln.”
In effect, NYS education is “white washing” hundreds of Caucasian cultures into a single term and depicting them as the source of alleged racism and oppression. Apparently, NYSED has never considered how offensive being called an Anglo might be for NY residents of Irish, Brazilian, Asian, Arabian, Polish or Russian descent. They’ve also seem to have forgotten that calling these diverse people “Anglo” will probably result in your child being mocked or worse.
In any case, below are a few new “Anglo Americans” as per NYS Education for 7th grade (Photos by various Wikipedia authors):
Was Dutch
Maybe this kind of ignorance was accepted in Southern California but it simply doesn’t fly on the right coast. Sorry NYSED, white heritage and culture does not all look the same.
